I was picking on my father last night about all of the bowl games in football, and he picked on me about 16 NHL teams making it into the playoffs.
Do you think that fewer teams should be allowed into the playoffs?
On a side note: The year is ending, and I wanted to thank everyone for accepting me in the hockey section. I really enjoy that I can come on here and get some great information and opinions of the game that I love so much. You guys are great and I hope you have a great, safe (insert holiday here)!!!

I think the NHL playoffs work pretty well the way they are. Especially considering the point differential of the teams from 3-8 in each conference. Most teams are pretty close. Right now the difference from 3-8 in both conferences is 3 points. Very rarely does someone miss the playoffs and there is an argument that they should have been in. I think it makes the matchups more interesting.
I’m not a big fan of it, but I also **** the MLB’s one wild card system. So I prefer the NHL system on the basis that there isn’t much they can do about it. I mean you can’t really expect a hockey team to have a first round by like the NFL. That would just be confusing and weird. So although 6 teams in the playoffs might be nicer, it would be impossible by logistics.
Oh Yea, during the regular season these guys play and then may not see each other again for two months, they forget who and why they were mad at the last time they played, come play-offs, they see each other 6 or 7 times in a two week period, three times the intensity, a guy gets cheap shotted Saturday nite, watch out Monday!! I think the Hockey play-offs are the coolest part of the Sports year!!!
Thats what makes hockey so great is that 16 teams have a shot.Theres something like 32 bowl games including the “Poisetta Bowl” and those games are not even considered playoffs.

If there weren’t so many teams making the playoffs How would my Leafs have a chance.
However if they aren’t going to have a balanced schedule , how can a team from the South East Division get compared to a team from the North East.
I’m a relative new comer to Yahoo Answer. But I’m impressed with the number of young people especially ladies that find the third best sport in the world so interesting. The lacrosse and CFL pages are boring.
No I don’t, Hales. Its just a big money grab for the owners and it makes it easy for a hot goalie on a middle-of-the-pack team to steal a Cup. Unless they are from southeastern Pennsylvania.
Too many divisions aren’t helping things. But, as things are, I would prefer three division winners and a Wild Card, no first round byes, and get it over with as soon as possible.
HALES: What ever makes you happy. But no matter what name you like PLEASE don’t make predictions for the Flyers, they have enough trouble staying out of their own way, and don’t need any help disappointing their followers.
I think its awesome. It just makes the NHL season longer and the period of times in between seasons shorter
16 teams do in fact make it to The Stanley Cup playoffs….but also remember it takes 4 rounds and 16 wins in those playoffs to win Lord Stanley’s Cup….which makes The Holy Grail of Hockey one of the most revered trophies in the world no matter how many teams make the playoffs.
i think they should limit how many teams go to the playoffs but i guess it would be more fun VS.ing all these teams so to answer your question yes and no. because yes they should limit how many teams go and no because it wouldnt be fair to the other teams if one team has the same pts. as another and that one team goes and the other one doesnt thats not fair.

Well at least the NHL playoffs make sense. The Bowl system for US collegiate football is a total joke. They play all those games and then they vote on a champion. Sounds more like the wonderful ‘sports’ of gymnastics and figure skating. Decide a clear winner for cripes sake. It shouldn’t be that hard to do.
Personally I’d like to see only 3 rounds of Stanley Cup playoffs (8 teams make it). I **** that it takes until June to decide a winner. I think the owner’s greed has made the process bloated for no other reason that to help evacuate dollars from the fan’s wallets.
I like the play off system just the way it is. It works fine for me. Now, if my team would get back there sometime soon, it would be nice. Happy holidays all!
i don’t think that too much teams get in to the playoff and its hard to get into the playoffs for the western conference anyways because the standings are so tight in the west you can be just 2 or 4 points away from playoff spot and your in the 10 or 11 spot

Yes I like all the teams going in, more hockey to watch, any less would be less satisfying….wasn’t that like a slogan to something??

There’s 30 teams & 16 get in. i think half is good.
When you consider the number of upsets in the first round over recent years, that argues that the number of teams is accurate – that is, the teams that got in deserved to.
Also, I recall a few years ago when every team over .500 got in, and every team under .500 didn’t. That convinced me that the system was good.
The only alternate would be an 8-team playoff, which in hockey is too few. Teams that have a legitimate shot would be eliminated, and the playoff season would be disappointingly short for the fans.
You cannot do a 12-team playoff, because there would be “byes” involved, and the better teams sitting for an entire series would be far too long. You can have byes when it’s only for a week, but in hockey rust comes too easily.
Sixteen is fine with me.
