Yu Gi Freak asked:
Maybe it’s just my philosophy, but I have always thought of the playoffs as a tournament for the elite teams, and a lucky few teams who get to qualify as the last seed. This year, the Stanley Cup Playoffs commenced on April 13th and will end on June 15th, 2011.
Is it just me or does the NHL need to shorten the playoffs to end in May?
Should round 1 and round 2 be shortened to a best of 5 format?
Does the 16 team format, affect the regular season because it is easier to qualify for the playoffs?
Let me know what you think.

I personally do not think they drag on for to long. The top 8 teams from the east and the top 8 teams from the west are the elite of the league. There are 7 teams from the east and 7 from the west that do not make it. As long as 1 series in every round goes to 7 games the playoffs will always go into June.
The NHL should NOT adopt the best of 5 for the first 2 rounds it would ruin the whole playoff structure as far as I am concerned. The 16 team format doesnt make it “easier” to make to the playoffs and turning it to a 14, 12, 10 or 8 team format would also ruin the structure of hockey not to mention increase the amount of concussions and serious injuries as teams will begin to play that much harder to secure the final spot.
Even the last seed in the east and west have to fight for their spot and it generally the most contested spot in the league.
No I don’t think so…..it is pretty long but the playoffs are great, if you’re worried about these games…just cut that fewer amount out of the regular season because playoff games matter much more and are also much more exciting to watch because they matter
They will never shorten the playoffs because playoff
games generate a good deal of revenue for the
participants.
Not to me it doesn’t.
I was kind of thinking the same thing yesterday watching the game. It seriously seems like another lifetime ago when the first round was going on. The playoffs could literally be considered another season.
But answer me this, is there anything better than playoff hockey? Simply put, no. You have to truly earn the cup to make it through that long and grueling NHL season plus playoffs. You bring up great ideas but I love it exactly the way it is
The more they play, the more the pay!
I think its fine just the way it is, the intensity is amazing though gotta love it!
Why in the world would you want the hockey season to be over sooner? I think it’s fine the way it is
I don’t think there is a problem with the fans or the players. Fans (who get 4 months without hockey) are lucky to have hockey from October to June and I believe it should stay as it is. Players seem to be able to take it, I don’t believe they complain about it. It works for marketing, so why change it?
For the format, I like it best of 7. It gives chance to team to prove what they’re capable and other teams to come back from a deficit, otherwise it would be too easy and wouldn’t be as accurate. Fair enough, after all, you still have to earn it.
Maybe, but these teams look forward to playoffs, That’s why it isn’t as exciting during season. Players tend to be more careful to not get injured or take more time come back from an injury.
