The Stanley Cup playoffs is an elimination tournament consisting of four rounds of best-of-seven series. The first three rounds determine which team from each conference will advance to the final round, dubbed the Stanley Cup Finals. The winner of that series becomes the NHL and Stanley Cup champion. The most recent Stanley Cup playoffs were the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The first round of the playoffs, or Conference Quarterfinals, consists four matchups in each conference, based on the seedings (1–8, 2–7, 3–6, and 4–5). In the second round, or Conference Semifinals, the top remaining conference seed plays against the lowest remaining seed, and the other two remaining conference teams pair off (unlike the NBA, for example, where the 1–8 winner always plays the 4–5 winner, regardless of who wins). In the third round, the Conference Finals, the two remaining teams in each conference play each other, with the conference champions proceeding to the Stanley Cup Finals.
For the first three rounds, the higher-seeded team has home-ice advantage (regardless of point record). In the Stanley Cup Finals, it goes to the team with the better regular season record. The team with home-ice advantage hosts games 1, 2, 5 and 7, while the opponent hosts games 3, 4 and 6 (games 5–7 are played “if necessary”).
The top 8 in each conference square of in the conference quarterfinals. Number 1 faces number 8 in a seven game series, first to 4 wins. 2 faces 7, 3 V. 6 and 4 V. 5.
After the first round, we go to the conference semifinals. The top seed from the regular season faces the bottom, the other two face each other.
After that it is the conference finals. Winner of each conference face the other winner to go for the cup.
The best team plays the worst, and so on, first team to win four games moves on.
Each series is the best of 7 games. There are no shootouts, just continuous overtime until one team scores.
there are two conferences(Eastern and Western) each with 15 teams
the top 8 teams from each conference make the playoffs (Ganymeade27 explained the seeding)
In each conference-
the 1st seed plays the 8th seed
2nd plays 7th
3rd plays 6th
4th plays 5th
When there is only one team left in each conference, they play each other. The winner wins the Stanley Cup!
