Is Anybody Else Getting Tired of All the Off Days in the NHL Playoffs?

cdn24fan asked:

I love the playoffs don’t get me wrong but I seem to be more engaged in the early rounds when there are multiple games each night.

By the time we get to the third round it seems like I have to wait forever between games. Because of network scheduling issues we end up with 3 days off between games and it seems like the 3 rd round has been going forever and we are still only at game 4?

The NBA manages to play every other night why can’t the NHL?

Do network ratings actually suffer for hockey because fans are less engaged without a steady stream of hockey?

Thoughts?
Joe good point, at the rate they are going though ,they will award the cup one day and you can watch the draft the next day.

JJ- you may have a point part of my letdown may be the onesided series in this round, just get them over so we can get to the final.
Bob, yes they were talking about a potential 9 day break there at one point. Its one thing to accomadate the networks , its another to bend over and take it up the hind end everytime NBC want’s to fill a hole in there schedule.

Personally I **** the weekend afternoon games too, aside from superbowl weekend we rarely have afternoon games in the regular season but come playoff time lets mess up the players schedule (not to mention my viewing schedule).
Homes, welcome back!

I have many issues.
maybe that should be 85 years of glory- I don’t remember mutch in the last 15 yrs.
Don Coreolis, that extended break would only make them rusty. Remember how bad Ottawa looked in the first 2 games against the Ducks 2 yrs ago after having 8 days off? They probably would have still lost but the 8 day break did not help them- broke their momentum.
Moose- yeah I know, I watched the Lackers nuggets game last night
Oops Lakers or maybe lackers as they were lacking something last night.

Yes, it is really dragging, But I heard on the news this morning that if Pitt wins tonight and the Wings win tomorrow night the finals will be moved up to Saturday.
    That’s IF they both win.

I agree i watched playoff hockey every night for the first two rounds and now this go round i really have lost some interest mainly due to the breaks bc then i get into a routine of doing something else and the the games don’t have the same intensity when i return to watching them…. then again this could be effected by the 3-0 3-1 record for the two Series also

You bet I **** it !! NHL wants to have as many prime-time games as possible yet they have off days in the playoffs and then 2 games the same night starting half an hr apart I think there’s more than meets the eye here.

    ps. Welcome back Homes

It could be worse… it could be like the NBA where it seems that they take off a week between games and then take a month off to re-energize for the next series.

I was JUST ABOUT TO post the same question…….2 off days AGAIN! It is RIDICULOUS, the NHL has dropped the ball on this one. People are starting to hit the golf course, go to the beach, camp, fish, watch baseball etc etc.

Osbourne made a good point the other day about these two days off crap……the NBA starts a month later and are in the semis as well. One off day is PLENTY……do they need extra time for their >1 hour flights?

The good news? There is talk of the Finals starting Saturday IF BOTH Pitt and Det win their next ones! It was originally 8-9 days of lay-off. ENOUGH already.

    GREAT question!

I’m probably in the minority here but I don’t really mind waiting between games. I’d rather put off the inevitable end of the season for as long as possible. I also wonder if giving Detroit and Pittsburgh an extended break wouldn’t improve the quality of play in the finals. I’d have to think if both teams were fully rested and healthy the series might be even better. I’m sure it’ll be a great series anyways.

Have to admit, I’ve lost interest, this round. It was more exciting in round 1 when there were games to watch and key match-ups. I will watch the final round with my son (tradition) but it gets difficult to stay interested with these breaks between games…

It sounds like you have addiction problems, dear. :D Take this opportunity to catch up on some good hockey reading……maybe a good book about the Habs. There is a newer one called “100 years of Glory”. It is a good quick read…..and it is in English ;)

    I know I didn’t answer your question….I ****.

Edit: Thanks for the welcome back. The honeymoon was a much needed break. Even got to fit in the cabin mountain thing for a few nights….good times. It was great seeing snow again.

It think the past 15 year is just a “setting-up-the-team” period, for their huge victory next season. ;)

    Leafsfan: Thanks, pumpkin.

    Texhabs: Thank you, cupcake.

yea i **** it will all the days off but sometimes players need the time off because of injuries.

Versus has really spoiled us this year for the playoffs, covering so many games night after night after night. I loved it, but must admit I was getting a bit of an overload trying to watch every one of them!

I really don’t mind the time between games in the latter rounds. It gives me time to decompress after watching some of these intense games.

The NBA plays every other night, because they aren’t getting checked into the glass every couple of minutes or wearing 40# worth of equipment while running up and down the court. When the NBA goes to full contact basketball, I’ll bet they take a few days between games, too!

  11. NYR says:

Yep, it seems to be dragging on now. Both series already look like they’re over, but then they have to drag it out with 2 day breaks. I actually found myself watching the NBA playoff game last night because I needed my fix of sports…

I also don’t like the afternoon games. It just doesn’t feel right…

  12. Moose--WOAH! LIVIN ON A PRAYER! says:

You know, I actually watched a basketball game the other day. I think that says it all…

  13. Nice Guys Finish Last says:

    yes…that’s why you watch Baseball..

Unless there’s an issue with arena availability or we’re talking about cross-country travel (and we’re not), every other day should be the norm. It’s one thing to have one two-day break in a series, but this is getting to be tedium.

It’s not like these guys are flying commercial.

Worse…so Sunday you had the Memorial Cup final starting at 4:30pm, with the Chicago-Detroit game at 3pm. So two significant games with overlap, and no Sunday night game. I’d **** to think how it plays out if Game 4 of Chicago-Detroit went into OT.

If you live in the Windsor area and are a Wings fan (and there’s a lot of folks in that boat), that’s brutal. Luckily the Wings game was a blowout, but still.

I’m trying to remember what having your favourite team in the playoffs was like. Memory seems to be fading…

    Congrats Homes!

  15. zaphodsclone says:

You think it is bad now; just wait and see if the Pens sweep and the Wings win the next game.

9 days off till the Cup series.

9 freakin days; wow I can hear the neilson ratings crashing now.
