In Ice Hockey (NHL and Olympics) When Can the Goalie Come Out of the Goal and Cross the Center Line?

flabbyfatso asked:

I have watched hockey games where a team is desperate so they take the goalie out of the goal and have him play offense – usually the other team scores. When is this allowed to happen and why would a team do it since it seems like it doesn’t work.

Usally they take the Goalie out completly, they leave an open net and have another player come off the bench so the team has more offensive players on the ice, watch more carefully because the Gaolie is off the ice completly, think about it with all those pads and gloves he would have a hard time shooting the puck.

The goalie doesn’t play offense. They just pull the goalie out and leave their net open so they can have an extra player. (6 on 5) This would allow them to at least try to get another goal, it usually goes the other way around, but hey its worth a try.

It’s a penalty for crossing the red line during play. They take the goalie off the ice and put out a forward, the goalie doesn’t go up and shoot lol

The goalie is often pulled when there is nothing to lose, usually with less than two minutes to play. But the goalie does not go on offense. An extra offensive player is put onto the ice to take his place. Although Evgeni Nabokov of the Sharks did score a goal a few years back on an empty net :)

Usually the goalie comes out near the end of th 3rd and to get an extra man on ice to either try to score and tie it or cut the lead. it caan hppen whenever they wan

The goalie may cross the center ice line any time he wants. He may not, however, play the puck on the far side. That’s the only penalty in the books.
