In NHL hockey, what is the difference between a shot on goal and a chance?
please explain.

    a shot on goal is when a puck goes in or would have gone in had a save not been made (goalie makes save or an opponent knocks it away) a chance is a subjective stat when scorekeepers or analyst think the team had a legitimate opportunity to score a goal.

    A shot on goal is any shot that hits the goalie or goes in the net. A chance is a judgement made as actual chances to get a goal. They felt it was a good way to see who is controlling the game by excluding just random shots on net that will not go in.
